A Pierced Penny for Your Thoughts: Exploring African American Folk Belief and Identity on Red Hill’s Quarter Place

From the 1770s to the 1940s, Red Hill’s Quarter Place was a site of dwelling, work, and community for generations of enslaved African Americans, and later free sharecroppers. Two pierced coins, along with several other artifacts excavated from the Double Cabins site in 2025, may carry connections to longstanding African American folk traditions and spiritual practices. Join staff archaeologists Lucia Butler and Margaret Dudley to learn about these artifacts and their possible connections to the culture of the Quarter Place community.
