Hello! My name is Lucia Butler, and I’m the Staff Archaeologist at Red Hill. I grew up in Arizona but have lived in Virginia for several years now. I graduated from the College of William & Mary with a B.A. in Anthropology and became interested in archaeology after participating in the Dr. James W. Jordan Archaeology Field School and interning in an archaeology lab at William & Mary.
I joined the Red Hill team in 2021 as a Visitor Center Associate, then became Operations Admin Assistant in 2022. In 2023, when Red Hill began its in-house archaeology program, I had the privilege to bring my archaeological experience to Red Hill’s research as the Staff Archaeologist. In my role, I oversee surveys of Red Hill’s cultural resources, manage the site’s collection of archaeological artifacts, and coordinate volunteers to participate in our research. During the summer and fall, you can find me digging on the grounds (come say hello and see what we’re doing!), and other times of the year, I’m processing artifacts in the archaeology lab at Red Hill’s Administrative and Research Center.
Outside of work, I love reading, baking, and hiking.
