During the American Revolution, signal whistles played an important role in relaying basic commands to the sharpshooters of the Continental Army. The ability of a soldier to recognize and obey the different whistle signals essential. It was often the only way to communicate among the noise, smoke and confusion of battle. Signal Whistles were most often made of wood, antler or other available materials. Our signal whistle is based on a surviving period example. The Sharpshooters of the Continental Army brought with them a variety of drill commands from their hometown musters, frequently spiced with thier own original whistle signals.
