Searching for the Hearth: The Archaeology of a Lost Kitchen

In a quiet corner of Red Hill’s grounds, screened in by boxwoods and holly bushes, is the site where a kitchen stood for more than 75 years. While the structure was lost to a fire, its remains and associated artifacts can teach us about the foodways of Red Hill and the lives of the enslaved and free cooks who lived and worked in the kitchen.
