Discover the various means by which Patrick Henry generated income during his retirement at Red Hill, and how, through these diverse endeavors, he succeeded in eliminating his debts and leaving an inheritance to his children- a feat accomplished by few Founding Fathers.
About the speaker:
Mark Couvillon is a historian and author with over 35 years of experience in the museum field. He holds a B.S. in history with a concentration in historic preservation and an archaeology degree from Longwood University. He is certified by the National Association of Interpretation.
Mark was employed by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation as a historical interpreter for over 30 years. Before his time at Colonial Williamsburg, Mark worked as a museum interpreter for the Jamestown/Yorktown Foundation and as a museum assistant at Red Hill. He also served as a Trustee for the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation.
Mark has written and edited numerous articles and books on Patrick Henry, including Patrick Henry’s Virginia (2001), Patrick Henry: Corrections of Biographical Mistakes… (2011), Give Me Poetry (2011), and The Demosthenes of His Age (2013). His most recent book, In Sickness and in Health: The Marriage of Patrick Henry and Sarah Shelton (2021), deals with Patrick Henry’s wife’s struggle with mental illness.
