On July 15, 1717, Charles Chiswell received a grant of land in Hanover County from Lt. Governor Alexander Spotswood. On this land, in 1719, he built the house known as Scotchtown. Patrick Henry purchased Scotchtown in 1770 and he and his wife Sarah, and their six children took occupancy in 1771. During his years at Scotchtown Henry was busy with civic activities. It was from Scotchtown that he rode in 1775 to St. John’s Church in Richmond to deliver his famous “Give Me Liberty or Death Speech”, and in 1776 to be elected first Governor of Virginia. In 1778 Scotchtown was sold as Henry had moved to the Governor’s Palace in Williamsburg. This is a great addition to your Patrick Henry collection.
