Position Description
The Executive Director (a.k.a. Executive Vice-President) of the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation, Inc., must possess the ability to exercise a strong leadership role in charting the future of the vibrant and expanding nonprofit organization that has maintained Red Hill, the National Memorial to Patrick Henry, since 1944. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Trustees.

The Foundation’s mission is to promote education, historic preservation, scholarship, and research programs about the life, times, philosophy and legacy of Patrick Henry. This mission includes historic preservation and museum interpretation of Red Hill, Patrick Henry’s last plantation home and burial place.

Patrick Henry’s Red Hill plantation is located along the beautiful Staunton River in rural Charlotte County, Virginia. Information about Red Hill and the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation may be found at the website http://www.PatrickHenry.com and http://www.RedHill.org.

The ideal Executive Director must have excellent administrative, leadership, communication (written and verbal), scholarship, and management skills as demonstrated by a strong work ethic, outgoing personality, and enthusiastic support for the mission and vision of the Foundation.

To this purpose, a combination of the following is needed:

  1. The willingness to become a passionate spokesperson for the life, times, philosophy, and legacy of Patrick Henry.

  2. Knowledge of historic preservation, Virginia and American history, and collection management.

  3. The imagination to develop and promote relevant and engaging educational programs to expand membership and site attendance for all ages and audiences, and produce an informative quarterly newsletter.

  4. Strong fund-raising ability, including grant writing and the ability to help plan and coordinate a major capital campaign and approach individuals for donations.

  5. Ability to oversee staff and daily operations at Red Hill.

  6. Interest in genealogy and the ability to work with the Descendants’ Branch of the Foundation.

  7. Skills and enthusiasm to inspire Trustees, contribute to the development and execution of the vision statement, expand donor base, work with other history-related groups to promote regional tourism, and coordinate activities with other Patrick Henry sites in Virginia.

  8. Skill to coordinate long-range capital projects, including the design and construction of the new Visitors Centre, TEA-21 Trails Project, land and timber management, and acquisition of adjacent acreage.

  9. Effective knowledge of nonprofit business practices and financial management skills, including the preparation and administration of the annual budget.

  10. Computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and e-mail. Also, general knowledge of website development, Internet presentation, and QuickBooks accounting software is desirable.

  11. Adaptability to work and live in a rural setting.

Required qualifications: At least 3 years in nonprofit, historic site management, or education. Must have college degrees in history, humanities, historic preservation, or related fields; postgraduate degree is required and a Ph.D. is preferred. Applicant must have permission to work in the United States.

Compensation and Benefits: The Executive Director position offers a competitive salary and benefits. Also, the Executive Director’s residence is provided at Red Hill.

Regional Information: Red Hill is located in rural Charlotte County, Virginia, along the beautiful Staunton River.
