1769 Henry admitted to the bar
of the General Court
Colonial Virginia's highest court,
the General Court, consisted of the royal governor and the
members of the Council, who were appointed by the king. The
General Court met in the Capitol in Williamsburg. Its members
also comprised the upper house of the colonial legislature,
or General Assembly. Only a small number of attorneys were
admitted to practice in the General Court, which decided appeals
from the county courts and all capital cases. Attorneys were
not allowed to practice both in the county courts and the
General Court.
