May 29, 1736 Patrick Henry born
at Studley in Hanover County
Patrick Henry was the son of John Henry
and his wife, Sarah Winston Syme Henry. There were two sons
and seven daughters in the family. When Patrick was about
12, the family moved to Mt. Brilliant. He was educated mainly
by his father and his uncle, the Reverend Patrick Henry, both
of whom were educated at the University of Aberdeen.
Henry's house and furnishings were
destroyed by fire in 1757. He sold the slaves and set up storekeeping
again. A drought destroyed the crops and his store business
failed.
In 1760 Patrick and Sarah Henry moved
to Hanover Tavern, across the street from the county courthouse,
where he helped his father-in-law and studied law in his spare
time.
